UK landscapes

I love the variety of the UK regions and have tried to capture something of the essence of the place being portrayed. I paint from experience and refer to photographs as well. Often the photographs can only help with shape – the colours are not always as I remember. The photographs show the moment – five minutes later the light can be very different giving a different atmosphere to the image.

The Birmingham - Worcester canal runs under a low hill

It was the brickwork that drove me to paint this picture.

I was attracted by the reflections and shadows on the paved footpath

Briar Mill bridge is near a busy sports centre yet it is very peaceful by the canal.

You ring the bell to attract the ferry.

By the inner harbour, the river Dart is to the left.

Crail, Fife is so picturesque I painted it several times

I took the foreground boats from Pittenweem along the coast.

The Fleet lies behind the Chesil Beach shingle bank (across the water).

Brunel designed the first suspension bridge - still in use.

Based on several photos - I added the effects of the storm.

The Yorkshire Dales always seem to be changing colour, especially in autumn

Having been to the water's edge on a warm evening, we turned back towards Bognor Regis across the wet sand towards the shingle bank.

Witley Court and fountain at Great Witley, Worcestershire. It is a ruined Italianate mansion. Dating from the seventeenth century on the site of a former manor house, it was enormously expanded in the early nineteenth century.

My granddaughter wanted me to paint a picture containing lambs and a blossom tree. I included them in a scene of the Mill at Salwarpe

In 2008 we stayed at Wool in Dorset. This is above Man o' War beach near by and Durdle Door can be glimpsed in the distance. The picture.shows my son and family.

The shingle bank stretches towards Bridport in the west, with "the Fleet" behind it.
